Buffalo, NY has taken its first steps toward supplying additional welders for the growing welding industry that expects more than 17,000 job openings related to welding or similar fields. A $3.2 million Buffalo Billion initiative aims to connect students at Alfred State College.

As a teenager Lonnie Benn saw his dad welding cylinder regulars, and he soon picked up his own torch, cutting names into metal plates, welding the cars of his friends, and even attempting to construct his own open cockpit submarine in his backyard.

K-3 Welding and its ‘Windy City’ welding sculpture has been turning heads along the south side of Chicago since 1996 when Mike Kuper, 62, opened the business. 

Dustin Payne served tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan with the Marines, but when he returned home, he sought out work in the oil fields of Williston, North Dakota. Payne, 28, had been welding a tank when it exploded on October 3rd. Image: WHNT
