When you think of a portable stick welder durability is almost as important as performance. At Baker's Gas we wanted to find out how tough the Lincoln Electric Sprinter 180 really is. We have been welding with the Sprinter for a while now and bring it in the back of our sales truck on demos. We did what any curious welder with a SkyTrak and demo machine would do, we put it through the wringer.Β
Drop it, Drag it, Beat it up --- Does it Still Weld?
In our latest video, we did not hold back. Here is how we put the Sprinter to the test:
Drop Test #1-- Cement Fall
First we gave it a few casual drops you would expect in the field-- off the tailgate of a truck off a cement block. The shell had some scuffs, but the machine stayed solid.
Drag Test -- Behind a Truck on GravelΒ
Next we hooked it up and drug it by the welding leads across a gravel lot. Not gently. It bounced, rolled, and ate plenty of dust and rock chips. Still no damage that would stop the show.Β
Drag Test - Cement Torture
Gravel was not enough. We pulled it against cement down and around a culdesac. The truck hit about 10 mph. Sparks flew, paint scraped and the handle took some abuse. It looked rough, but held together. (Leads did not come disconnected)
Final Drop - 10 Feet from a SkyTrak
For the big finale, we raised it with a SkyTrak and let gravity do it's worst. It hit hard. The case was officially banged up, but the internal components? Still intact, well enough to weld. We did take off the shell and powered it up the fan turned on but will it weld?Β
The Moment of Truth: Can it Still Weld?
After all of that, we plugged it in, struck an arc, and... it welded perfectly. Stick and TIG both fired up. Even when pulling hard on the welding leads no damage. All of those drops nothing broke loose enough to stop the machine. This was not just a test of Lincoln's design - it was a test of trust. If a machine can handle this kind of abuse and punishment and deliver welds, it earns a spot in your truck.Β
