Welding has proven to be a surprising but fulfilling career for many high school students, and Samantha Petrosino, 18, switched from the cheerleading squad and sports to a career in welding. Petrosino avoided classes that didn’t particularly interest her in high school, but her welding instructor said she has been one of the hardest working and best prepared students in the program.
Petrosino now works 12-hour shifts at a local welding shop three days a week where she repairs machines and works on an assembly line. She has plans to move out to San Diego in order to pursue a degree and certification in commercial diving and underwater welding. Welding has been the hardest job she’s ever held, but she adds that it has been extremely rewarding.

“When Fanning was in middle school, she thought she wanted to study culinary arts. She wasn’t exactly sure what she wanted to do after high school, but she knew it would involve food. But when she entered high school, some of her friends suggested a welding class at the Kokomo Area Career Center.
As she was deciding on classes for her sophomore year, she casually checked off the box for welding at the career center. She knew people in the class and thought it would be fun to give it a try. More than a year later, she’s already planning for her future as a welder.”

Waco Welding Students Goes Above and Beyond for Her Degree
“Kacy Crook is one for proving people wrong. ‘I wanted to do welding in high school,’ said Crook, 20, of Tyler and a recent graduate of Texas State Technical College in Waco. ‘My teacher said I could do it. I welded and cut one thing, and then he put me on the plasma table.’
Crook, a 2015 Bullard High School graduate, graduated from college Aug. 18 with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Welding Technology.”
Farm Credit Services Expands South Dakota Welding Program
“Redfield Ag Education Department received a $2,500 grant for a welding technology update. The grant is provided through Farm Credit Services of America’s (FCSAmerica) Working Here Fund.
Funds from the Working Here Fund grant will help to fulfill some of the needs of the Redfield Ag Education Department as they expand their agriculture education program. Funds will help to purchase things such as 10 new wire feed/stick welders with a TIG option, a plasma table, two portable air filtration systems, two stand-alone plasma cutters, a new dust collector and a wire feed/stick welder simulator. The new equipment will provide students with a hands-on safe experience and help them to gain the skills needed to enter welding careers.”

“The Southern Oklahoma Technology Center’s newest welding instructor worked as a welder in the field for 6 years in New Jersey and California before moving back to Ardmore to be closer to her family. She applied for the welding instructor position not expecting to hear back, and had almost forgotten she had by the time the school called her for an interview. ”

Vapors in Fuel Tank Ignited for Fatal Explosion
“A Leonard man was killed in an explosion Thursday afternoon as he attempted to complete welding work on a fuel tank.
Leonard Police Chief Brian Meserole said the incident occurred sometime between 4:30-5 p.m. in the 300 block of East Cottonwood Street. Meserole said Robert Damesworth, whom he estimated to be in his late 60s, was welding a diesel fuel tank attached to the rear of his farm truck when the explosion occurred.”
