Kansas City Students Consider Welding Career

A growing number of high school students in the Kansas City area are considering welding careers due to a significant demand for welders in their region. Manufacturers are making their needs known, and the Fort Osage Career and Technical Center has responded by offering welding students an opportunity to become certified while in high school.

One student shared that he hadn’t even considered what to do as a career until he learned about welding. “Right now, we’re just working on cutting metal with a torch,” he explained. “It’s hands on. I like the work. It’s fun.” The two-year program is open to seniors and juniors at the high school and is helping many prepare for an entry-level job in the welding field.

High School’s Welding Simulator Gets Students Started Fast
“A new virtual welding simulator will give Fairmont High School students the opportunity to weld outside of the workshop.

‘It’s a virtual so kids don’t burn their eyes. They don’t need a welding helmet. They don’t need welding gloves,’ Robert Bonin, Fairmont High School Career and Technical Education Teacher says.”

Community College Adds Welding Program
“The Labette Community College Board of Trustees on Thursday approved implementation of a new program beginning the spring semester pursuant to approval of the Kansas Board of Regents. LCC will implement a welding program at the college in January as recommended by the Institutional Curriculum and Instruction Committee.

Board member Sophia Zetmeir questioned if the program is needed, and Rick Carpenter assured her there is a great demand locally and nationally for skilled welders capable of more than pipe welding. He said pay is exceptional for those who are knowledgeable of various types of welding.”
