Mayo Civic Center Gets New Welded Statue

A new 5,500 pound sculpture has been welding by artist Po Shu Wang for the expanded Mayo Civic Center. Construction crews have installed it in its current location, but it is not year ready for the public.

Wang shared that the sculpture can be used to create music and light shows with a keyboard in a kiosk inside the Civic Center. According to Wang, “People will be able to type in messages, which will be translated into braille. The braille dots will then be assigned to a musical scale. The resulting music with lighting will be activated around both bases of the 30-foot-long sculpture.”

The end result will be a sculpture in a popular public space that invites interaction and creativity for all who encounter it. Wang hopes that strangers will find ways to be creative together.

Oregon Makes Big Investment in Job Training in School
“A $382,226 state-funded grant will help the Southern Oregon Education Service District bring new career-readiness programs to Jackson County students as soon as next year.

The programs will be new to this region, but some are familiar to the service district, which works with 13 school districts across Jackson, Josephine and Klamath counties. The SOESD first launched the Southern Oregon Air Academy in 2015 as a summer camp for Grants Pass middle-schoolers. The students learn how to fly drones and some basics of aerodynamics, and end the experience in a flight over Grants Pass accompanying a pilot. Through hands-on learning, that camp gives students a window into careers falling under the umbrella of science, technology, engineering, arts and math — often grouped as STEAM careers.”

The Citadel School of Engineering has more than doubled its offerings in the past five years while increasing its enrollment by 50 percent.”
