Weld My World - Welding News

NASA Trained Welder Started in Late 1960s

Welding instructor Becky Lorenz started her welding career in the late 1960’s with a sit-down strike to be allowed into the welding program, but she hasn’t spent much time sitting down since. Lorenz is a tireless welder who excelled in a male dominated profession where she was harassed and expected to wilt.

Today, Lorenza believes that the quality of her work stands for itself. She has worked through sickness and ongoing health challenges that may have sidelined other welders. These days she teaches welding at Frederick Community College and Montgomery College. She is also the founder and owner of Aerospace Welding Services, LLC after her time as a NASA-trained welder.

Welding Jobs

Couple Opens Welding Shop in Michigan
“Tough Weld Fabrication opened their storefront in Marysville back in November 2017. It gives the business a relaxed space to show off its plasma cut metal art and signs.

Amanda and Charlie Penrod of Marysville own Tough Weld Fabrication and are looking to build it up into a larger shop someday. Charlie Penrod worked as a land surveyor before being laid off in the midst of the 2008 recession. He got a job at a fabricating shop. Once he started making things there, he decided it was what he wanted to do.”

Welding Student Eyes Welding and Army Careers
“A senior at Dawson Springs High School, Ford is in his second year in the welding program at the Caldwell County Area Technology Center. ‘I just love welding altogether,’ he said. ‘I like working with my hands.’

His welding instructor, Mickey Bayer, nominated Ford for the AGC Technical Center Student of the Week and said he is a good student at the center. ‘He had very little or no welding experience (when he started the program), and he’s industry-certified now through the American Welding Society,’ Bayer said. ‘He’s taken 12 different classes with us, and he’s a good math student.’”

Virginia Expands Welder Training
“A new welding school in Buena Vista has been awarded $200,000 from the state. The grant will allow the school to help close a critical shortage of skilled welders across the country. WMRA’s Jessie Knadler heads to Buena Vista to take a look at the new wave of welders who will fill a growing need for skilled tradesmen in the future.”

Welding Education

New Welding School Opens in Indianapolis
“Lincoln Educational Services Corp. (Nasdaq: LINC) is adding welding and metal fabrication training to its offerings in Indianapolis. The for-profit post-secondary education institution says Indy is one of three campuses that will launch the welding program this year. The first courses will begin at the end of June and will launch later in South Plainfield, New Jersey and Columbia, Maryland.”

City and Country Welding Students Join Together for Class
“Monument School shop teacher Michele Engle and her six students welcomed Mark Lynch and four members of his high school welding class from Clackamas for two days of in-depth instruction.

With a student population of 47 for Monument, and the visitors coming from a technical school of 3,500, the matchup Feb. 26-27 was a learning experience for both groups.”

Welding Competition Sets Participation Record
“Lincoln-Way Central served as host to the 2nd Annual Lincoln-Way District Welding Contest on the evening of Thursday March 8th. With 49 students registering to compete, it was the largest District 210 welding contest to date. Parents, friends and former high school welding students also attended, bringing the total attendance to approximately 85 people.”

Welding School Raises Funds with Auction
“Bellingham Technical College’s Welding Fab Week is underway this week. BTC Director of Communications Marni Saling Mayer says  BTC’s Morse Center will be displaying student garden art work projects using materials donated by local industry.

An auction of the artwork by local students next week will benefit the program’s scholarship fund.”
