Military Veteran Recruits Women to Weld

A military veteran and now welding shop co-owner, Chanda Maldonado is busy recruiting more women to get involved in welding in Chattanooga, TN. She pitches a welding career to women saying,  “It’s very empowering to do this.”

 

Maldonado learned welding from her welding shop co-owner Brent Chambers, and the two hope to teach more welding classes throughout the summer. The two see many opportunities in the trades as positions open up.

Besides the students in her welding courses, Maldonado plans to teach her daughter the welding trade as well.

“The NEWTECH Welding Technology Program, under the leadership of welding instructor, Andrew Syder, is preparing Juniors and Seniors, in high school, for high demand/high wage jobs in the Manufacturing and Fabrication industries.

“A desire for a long-term career after a series of dead-end jobs prompted James Pietrow, 27, to look into welding. Jake McGann’s father introduced the 20-year-old to the craft when he was a young child and he found it “fun and relaxing.”

Introverted tendencies and a love of working with his hands caused Damond Daley, 26, to gravitate toward the industry. ‘It also gives you the opportunity to create things with your own hands,’ McGann said.”

Welding Student Joins His Instructor Because He Believes in Welding Careers
“[James George] enrolled in the welding program at Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) and went on to start as a full-time instructor at the school in February of 2017.

‘He’s not only building the program, but he’s building successful people out of it,’ George said of Sigmon.”

Columbus, OH High School Students Meet Local Job Recruiter
“Students at Columbus High School Friday got a firsthand introduction to what a life working at Behlen Building Systems might look. Tyler Bertsch, Behlen corporate training manager, spent time with Tracy Dodson’s welding classes at CHS to speak about welding opportunities with Behlen.

Columbus Career Coordinator Heidi Elliott said that Behlen has been a great supporter of its STEM Academy. She said companies visiting Columbus are always looking for opportunities for students in the form of apprenticeships, internships and part-time work that all could lead to full-time employment.”

Welding Is a Job and a Hobby for One Woman
“When Morgan Bledsoe’s car broke down, the single mother of three decided she wanted to take a diesel technology course at Linn-Benton Community College to learn how to take care of such problems. The course was full, so Bledsoe enrolled in a beginning welding technology class and found her calling.

‘I loved it from the first day,’ Bledsoe said. ‘It’s awesome.’ The 2000 West Albany High graduate has since gone on to enjoy a career welding everything from structural steel building projects to sawmills and even a rock screen used on the TV show ‘Gold Rush.’”

South Carolina Welding Rodeo Will Turn Scrap into Art
“Sparks will fly on Saturday, April 14 when Florence-Darlington Technical College’s ninth annual Welding Sculpture Rodeo returns to Francis Marion University’s Arts International Festival…

The contest, which will behind the FMU’s Smith University Center, starts at 7:30 a.m. with teams of professional and student welders running in a “scrap dive.” The competitors will pick out scrap metal that they will turn into pieces of art. The teams will have eight hours to complete their sculpture.”

North Carolina College Expands Welding Program with Grant
“Surry Community College Welding students are receiving an enhanced learning experience in fabrication by using the college’s new MegaFab Piranha 90 Hydraulic Ironworker that was purchased with a grant from the American Welding Society along with funds from the Surry Community College Foundation.

Surry was one of 11 schools chosen to receive the award out of more than 100 high schools, trade and technical schools and community colleges nationwide that applied for the 2017 grant program. Surry received $22,180 from the society Foundation Welder Workforce Grant, the only school in North Carolina to receive the grant funding.”

Grass Fire Started by Fence Welding Project
“On March 19, 2018, at approximately 1:50PM, the Prescott Regional Communications Center received a call reporting a grass fire in the area of Side Road on the north side of the city.

It was reported that the fire was burning quickly and within 20 feet of a structure so the original single Engine Company response was upgraded to include an additional Engine, as well as a Brush Truck and a Battalion Chief. ”
