Huron Welding in South Dakota spans back four generations to Jack Wold, who established the business in 1918 in a cramped workshop. Wold was among the first, if not the first, welders in the region.
Through hard work, thrift, and innovation, Wold managed to survive the recession, sometimes only taking in $.25 a day. However, the business has expanded to become a much larger operation that his family continues to operate. Today, Joel Wold uses his engineering degrees from South Dakota State University and San Diego State University to design projects on a computer before taking up his welding gear.
Huron Welding works on projects in town and across the region, and from the looks of things, it promises to continue for many years to come.
Welding Jobs
Welding Accreditation Now Offered at High School
“The welding program at Elgin High School recently earned accreditation from the American Welding Society, certifying the school’s newly renovated welding lab as an accredited testing facility. Students and community members will be able to use the facility to complete a welding certification at the District U-46 school.
‘Obtaining ATF designation from AWS is a momentous accomplishment for any facility. The fact that this team was able to get this designation at the high school level is extraordinary,’ said Kinasha Brown, District U-46 career and technical education coordinator. ‘Accreditations are important in validating the quality of a program. Students enrolling in the U-46 welding program are being prepared to meet industry standards in welding to immediately join the workforce or further their education after graduation.’”
Factory Turns Itself into Welding School to Meet Job Demand
“Patrice de Bellefeuille knew a career jump wasn’t going to be easy. The 25-year-old father of two needed to support his family and couldn’t afford to stop working full-time to go back to school. De Bellefeuille spent several years working in construction before doing odd jobs at a company that produces various garbage bins.
It paid the bills, but de Bellefeuille knew he wanted more. His golden opportunity came as his most recent employer, Granby-based manufacturer plant Durabac, was facing a major labour shortage.”
Welding Education
Welding School Revolutionized with Simulator
“A Smart Welding Lab at George Brown College’s Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies (CCET) aims to change the way future welders are trained and ensure students are industry ready, says its president.
The new 3,053-square-foot facility, located at the college’s Casa Loma Campus in Toronto, features 26 individual stations with computerized systems, large LCD screens around the room with cameras for demonstrations and the option for students to start their training on virtual welding systems.”
North Dakota Schools Merge and Expand Agriculture Program
“When Kidder County merged its two high schools for this school year, there was one major hitch: the county school district’s ag program had always been based at Tappen High School. All of the students now go to Steele High School. Steele had a shop, but not the kind of facility that would house all of the agriculture and vocational education offerings.
To solve the problem, the district put up a $450,000 agriculture education expansion that they hope will continue to attract more students to the program and prepare students for careers in agriculture for years to come.”
Florence, SC Welding Rodeo Announces Winners
“Two Florence County teams took top honors Saturday in the 9th Annual Florence-Darlington Technical College Welding Sculpture Rodeo on the campus of Francis Marion University as part of Arts International Festival.
Florence-Darlington Technical College took top honors in the student division while SteelFab took top honors in the professional division.”
Wichita Falls School District Hosts Welding Competition
“Wichita Falls Independent School District, Career Education Center welding instructors Stephen Davis said he and fellow welding instructor Gary Cunningham were talking one day when they decided it might be a good idea to have a welding contest while certifying students for welding.
Davis said the contest was divided into seven different categories, including: stick, wire and MIG welding where the students could show their welding skills.”
Community College Student Wins Prestigious Scholarship
“Bladen Community College welding student, Savannah Doyle Schmidt, has been awarded the North Carolina Space Grant Community College Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarship.
The Community College STEM Scholarship is based on academic merit and potential for successful matriculation into a four-year degree program. It is the goal of the scholarship award to foster community college retention in STEM academic tracks through graduation or transfer to a four-year institution, to promote STEM career awareness and workplace skills while recognizing high academic achievement and promise, and to increase participation of all students, including underrepresented minorities, females, and students with disabilities, in STEM-related careers.”

Welding Gone Wrong
Nuclear Reactor Faces Welding Delay
“French utility EDF said on Tuesday that problems with the weldings at its Flamanville site may have an impact on the costs and the schedule for starting the long-delayed nuclear reactor.
Following an assessment by ASN, the French nuclear regulator, EDF said in a statement it ‘will be able to specify whether the project requires an adjustment to its timetable and its costs.’ The ASN has previously warned about the weldings and about the ‘tight’ start up schedule at Flamanville.”
Welding Supplies on Sale
Baker’s Gas and Welding provides the welding machines, welding gear, and welding supplies that every welder needs to get started, to hit the job site prepared, or to work on welding projects at home. The Build with Blue Promotion continues to offer significant savings on welding machines from Miller Electric by adding rebates on top of Baker’s slashed prices on welders.
