The SkillsUSA National Championship in Louisville, KY draws trade and welding students from all over America, including SUN Tech welding graduate Erin Beaver. Beaver is making her third straight appearance. Beaver will attend as a member of the Pennsylvania College of Technology’s all-female welding team.
A total 21 students from their school qualified for the national tournament, but Beaver will attend as one of the few members of an all-female team.

Former Coal Workers Retrained for Welding Career
“The Southwest Virginia Workforce Development Board sponsored 80-hour MIG welding classes at Ridgeview High School in Clintwood, the Russell County Career & Technology Center in Lebanon and the Tazewell County Career & Technical Center in Tazewell. The graduates were participants in POWER-Resource Full, a national dislocated worker grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.”

Welding Program Uses Donated Materials
“During the last year alone Carbon County Higher Education Welding students have used more than 2,000 pounds of donated material from Sinclair Refining Company’s scrapyard in class while preparing for competitions and completing community projects such as the Soroptimist Park handrail as part of their learning experience.
‘A lot of my students’ parents work out at Sinclair,’ Welding instructor Mark Flaherty said. ‘That is what we are training them for. Sinclair is a fantastic community employer. They have been very generous to us with the metal. They are just great.’”
Indiana County Approves Funding for Welding Program
“The Randolph County Board of Commissioners Monday approved a $126,687 grant from Economic Development Income Tax (EDIT) proceeds to help establish a comprehensive welding program at Winchester Community High School. The welding program is available for use by students in school systems throughout Randolph County.
Randolph Central Superintendent Rolland Abraham said the program in its first year will include Randolph Central, Randolph Eastern and Randolph Southern students working to obtain their American Welding Society certification.”
High School Students Take College Welding Classes
“West Virginia Northern Community College and Brooke High School are working together to offer students a chance to complete an advanced degree in welding and a high school diploma at the same time. The schools outlined their plans for the combined effort at a press conference Tuesday held at the high school.
‘We are able to offer a sequence of courses which allows students to achieve an applied science in welding technology degree prior to graduation,’ Scott Abercrombie, the career technical education director for Brooke High School, explained.”
Arizona Students Now Certified to Weld
“Twelve students in the Mayer High School Agriculture program passed their certification tests and are now prepared to work as welding professionals.
On May 16, 11 students took their welding certification tests as recognized by the 1G American Welding Society. One student took her 2G MIG Flux Core certification test.”

“A 21-year-old man was taken to a hospital on Monday morning after a welding accident in West Valley City. The person was welding when an electrical arc caused injuries to his arms and face, officials state. The incident happened at 8:13 a.m. at a UPS shipping facility at 2040 West Parkway Boulevard.”
