Summer Carlson is still in high school, but she has already found her dream job, planning to forge a lifetime career in welding after working as the first woman at Exeter’s Horizontal Boring & Tunneling. Carlson has a passion for welding, completing a series of welding classes at her school and now splitting her time between welding and moving materials with heavy machinery.
Carlson spends her work days welding, grinding, and cutting metals, and she has no plans to find anything else. Such commitment to a stable career in welding is appealing to more women who are embracing the job opportunities available in manufacturing and fabrication businesses.
Welding Careers and Jobs

Welder Putters around for Golf Pro
“The PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club is creating revenue and work for more companies than first thought. A Valley Park welding company says they’ve had a couple of business calls at the country club this week.
Dustin Hewkin, the third-generation owner of Valley Park Welding, is a modern-day Iron Man who enjoys fixing some irons, man; or, at least, some putters for PGA pro Bryson DeChambeau.
‘I was able to fuse weld all around the putter head so I didn’t have to add any material or weight to it so it all stayed the same,’ Hewkin said.”

Over 100 Total Women Earn Welding Degrees in Prison
“Governor Eric Holcomb handed out certificates to women inmates at the Madison Correctional Facility. About 60 women graduated from different metalworking programs through Ivy Tech Community College. Friends and family of the inmates were there to celebrate alongside Ivy Tech representatives and local businesses.
Stacey Stultz has been in the Madison Correctional Facility for nearly a year, she graduated with her AWS certification Thursday. “I don’t love that they have to come see me at the prison,” Stultz said. “But I think it’s cool they can see what I’m actually doing and that I’m making the most of this time.”
Welding Gone Wrong
Oil and Tanks Ignited at Welding Business
“Emergency crews were called to a structure fire Monday at Marway Welding in Elkhart County.
The company is located in the 27000 block of County Road 50, north of Nappanee. Several fire departments responded… Initial reports said there was oil or hydraulic fluid on the ground and that it somehow ignited.”
News Navy Tubes Need Welding Repairs
“Less than a year after the U.S. Navy touted how purchasing missile tube assemblies in advance for its future Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines had helped trim the cost of the program, the service says it has uncovered faulty welds in those components that will need potentially costly and time-consuming fixes. The tubes are common to the Block V Virginia-class attack submarines and the U.K.’s Dreadnought-class ballistic missile boats, as well, and the issue could lead to delays in building all three types.”
