Teens in the Canadian Arctic town of Cambridge Bay were struggling to stay out of trouble, and so the village elders reached out to a husband and wife team of welders, Kerry and Amanda Illerbrun. The Illerbruns visit the town for a few weeks each year in order to mentor and teach the teens more welding skills.
One of their apprentices already has plans to create metal birds to sell to tourists, while another has plans to build his own weight bench. All of the teens have been involved in cultural activities, including learning about their Inuit heritage. They have welded a large wolf and muskox sculpture that are currently on display in the town. Many of the teens hope to continue welding as a future career path.
Welding is a great lifelong skill to expose students to spark a potential future in welding!

Miller Electric Introduces New Weld-Mask 2
“Weld-Mask 2 is engineered specifically for the unique hazards prevalent among construction and ship welders, as well as other welders who work in tight, challenging environments. Its compact, low-profile design allows users to weld in spaces where access with traditional helmets is limited.” This design was specifically added with space under the mask for a respirator. Miller has another Weld Mask that is designed for applications where a respirator is not needed.
Both Miller options are a great alternative in areas that a traditional welding helmets will not fit.
