Weekly Welding Roundup – Metallica Grants $10,000 to Grand Rapids Community College

The welding program at Grand Rapids Community College is among those that have benefitted from a $10,000 grant from the legendary heavy metal band Metallica. The college is one of 10 schools that were awarded $10,000 from the Metallica Scholars grant.

Out of a sense of gratitude for being able to do what they love, the band developed the All Within My Hands Foundation that has teamed up with the American Association of Community Colleges on the project. The AAC is a group that aims train workers at community colleges for lifelong careers. The cities competing for grants in the program were among those that the band had toured.

Welding Shop Gives Business New Life
“Two young men just a few years out of high school hope to restore Sheridan Iron Works to its original glory and operate it under its original name by February 2019.

Derek Gilbert purchased the building in 2014 from previous owners Joe and Sue Lytton, who purchased the building and struggling business in 1989 from Alvin Neard and Ellie Horsley. Instead of continuing the business, Gilbert wanted to use it as a workshop until someone he thought would be good for the building expressed interest.”

Welding Students Build New Year’s Blueberry
Students at Cape Fear Community College have been working to create the “blueberry” frame to be used for the first Burgaw New Year’s Eve Blueberry Ball Drop celebration. Welding students built the 6-foot aluminum framework over the course of three days.

‘The most challenging and interesting part was creating the petals for the ‘crown’ on the bottom of the blueberry,’ said Welding Instructor Albert Meadowcroft.”

Students Design and Weld Park Bench
“Randolph Community College’s 2019 Welding Diploma class recently designed, made blueprints for and built two park benches for the area outside the Welding Center on the Archdale campus.

The students enjoy taking a break from welding class in a shaded area in front of the building, but noticed there was no place to sit and enjoy the shade. Department Head Michael Ford asked them how they would fix the problem, and the bench idea was born.”

Police said the deceased man, who was in his early 40s, was already dead when emergency crews arrived at the scene in the community’s industrial area. The second man was taken to an Edmonton hospital for treatment of serious injuries.”
