10th Annual Image of Welding Awards
"The Image of Welding awards are issued in eight categories. The awards recognize individuals and organizations that have shown exemplary dedication to promoting the image of welding in their communities. Nominations will be judged by WEMCO—An Association of Welding Manufacturers, which is composed of executives of welding industry suppliers to promote the welding equipment market. Enhancing the image of welding as a critical industry is among their priority programs. The winners will be announced at the Image of Welding Awards Ceremony to be held during FABTECH 2012, November 12–14, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV." Who is WEMCO?
Over 80 companies that manufacture welding equipment and products represent manufacturers as a standing committee of the American Welding Society. The Welding Institute Awards
TWI is an independent research and technology organization. Based in Cambridge, UK, the company has international teams of consultants, scientist, engineers, and support staff. Industrial members turn to this team for support. The mission of TWI is, "To create value and enhance quality of life for Members and stakeholders through engineering, materials and joining technologies." A number of awards are presented at the TWI Annual Dinner. The Brooker Medal is awarded "in recognition of the recipient's personal contribution to the science, technology and industrial exploitation of materials joining. It recognizes high industrial, research or educational responsibility of a character which has beneficially influenced the advancement of materials joining technology." The Lidstone Medal is given to someone over 40 years old who has given a significant contribution to the community. Larke-Lillicrap Award recognizes practical application of novel welding or joining knowledge. Distinguished Service Award and Honorary Fellowship recognition are presented as well. Granite City High School Student Awarded
Robert "Robby" Mullen, a student at Granit City High School was recommended by his teacher and selected by the St. Louis Section of the American Welding Society as "Outstanding Welding Student of the Year." His teacher, Mark Jones, was happy to see Mullen receive the award on April 12 at a local awards ceremony. Mullen said that he wants to continue learning through college. Mullen's father, Harris credits the school's special education department in helping Robert and Allen (his brother) succeed (both boys are deaf). The Mullen's 1968 Impala has been inspiration enough for the budding welder. The 18 year old hopes to attend Southwestern Illinois College or Ranken Technical College and then get a job in welding or machining. Read the story here.
