Welding Aluminum with Miller Electric's Spoolmate 100 & 150

MIG Welding Aluminum

The Miller Multimatic & Millermatic series are a versatile line of welding machines that offer various options for welding aluminum, including the use of a spool gun. When it comes to welding aluminum, using a spool gun provides several benefits:

The Spoolmate 100 & 150 offer enhanced control. Aluminum is a soft and highly conductive metal, making it prone to heat distortion. Using a Spoolmate allows for better control over the heat input, as the wire feed and the welding arc are closer to the workpiece. This results in improved precision and reduces the chances of overheating or burning through the aluminum. If you burn through you are essentially wasting your weld.

If you try to feed aluminum through your machine and MIG gun, the result will be a mess of wire. When you use a Spoolmate you eliminate that. Aluminum wire is relatively soft and has a higher tendency to tangle or birdnest during the feeding process. The Spoolmate design, with a small and dedicated wire feed path, helps to minimize wire tangling issues. This ensures a smoother wire feed and reduces downtime caused by wire feed problems. Fewer problems means less downtime and that equals more profit.

Keeping your wire clean reduces the chances of contamination, which can result or poor weld quality. Aluminum especially is susceptible to surface contamination, such as oxidation and oil residue, which can negatively impact the quality of the weld. By utilizing a Spoolmate, the aluminum wire is fed directly from the gun, reducing the distance traveled and minimizing the chances of wire contamination. This leads to cleaner and higher-quality welds so you have fewer re-dos at the end of the day.

Most spoolguns over the years are clunky and hard to move around. Resulting is quick fatigue and bad welds. Now welding with the Spoolmate 100 or 150 offers great maneuverability! The lightweight and compact design of these spoolguns makes them easy to handle, especially in tight spaces or when welding in odd positions. This increased maneuverability allows for more precise control over the welding process, resulting in better weld quality.

The Spoolmates are very versatile. They can work on machines like the Millermatic 211, Multimatic 215, 220 and 235. While the Multimatic 215 is a multi-process welder that can perform MIG, TIG, and stick welding, using the Spoolemate expands its capabilities to include aluminum welding. This versatility allows you to handle a wider range of projects and materials without the need for additional welding equipment.

Miller Spoolmate 150

We mentioned two spoolguns by Miller, the Spoolmate 100 & 150. There are some key difference between these two spoolguns, like length, duty cycle and accessories. The 100 comes with a carrying case which is pretty nice. However it lacks in length, duty cycle and versatility. It can only weld 4000 series aluminum while the 150 can do both 4000/5000. Only 12ft in length for the 100 as the 150 comes with a 20ft cable. The main difference would be that the 100 pushes 135A at a 30% duty, while the 150 pushes a whopping 150A at a 60% duty. Despite the difference they both provide a reliable way to weld aluminum.

It's important to note that welding aluminum can be more challenging than welding other metals due to its unique properties. Proper technique, including selecting the appropriate shielding gas, wire type, and settings, is crucial for achieving successful aluminum welds. It is recommended to consult the Miller user manual and follow the manufacturer's guidelines for aluminum welding to ensure optimal results.
