Texas Puts Emphasis on Training Skilled Workers

As the state of Texas puts a stronger emphasis on training skilled craft workers to fill the many job opportunities opening up, men and women are seizing the new opportunities that come with big paychecks and bonuses. Brittney Marburger, 18, is one of 27 Coastal Bend high school students selected for a training program at Cheniere Energy, a liquid natural gas company.

Marburger will begin with structural welding and then move on to combination and stainless steel welding over the next 6 to 18 months. During the training period, the program will provide a tuition reimbursement and financial incentives, including up to $10,000 in bonuses and $23.50/hour. After graduating from the job training program, Marburger could move on to another opportunity at Cheniere.

Welds Repaired on U.S. Navy’s Nuclear Submarines
“Shipbuilders are fixing the biggest problem on one of the Pentagon’s top priorities, the Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet. As Defense Secretary Ashton Carter toured the Groton shipyard and talked up the importance of submarines, Electric Boat officials told reporters they’re fixing faulty welds in the nuclear-powered propulsion plants of three Virginia-class attack subs. As a result, the long-delayed USS Minnesota will finally leave the shipyard Friday. We’ve pretty much identified all of the issues that arose as a result of that vendor, one Electric Boat official said referring to pipe-maker Nuflo.

GM Announces Welding Breakthrough
General Motors Co. believes it is the first automaker to weld steel to aluminum through resistance spot welding, a technique it spent some two years developing and expects will save weight and be less expensive.

The automaker said Wednesday that within a few months it will deploy welded steel to aluminum joinings on a seatback for the Cadillac CT6 luxury vehicle and shortly thereafter on a CT6 hood reinforcement (a steel pedestrian protection reinforcement will be welded to an aluminum hood inner panel). The CT6 structure includes 11 different materials and uses multiple joining processes. The car is built at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant.
