While Jimmy Byrd has been working as a welder since the age of 18, his daughter Kristin took a very different path before entering the family welding business

Kristin explored careers in nursing and modeling before working as a driver for a logging company. However, at the age of 30, she has taken up welding and is training for an apprenticeship program. While both of Kristin’s brothers worked as welders at one time, one left the business in order to pursue another career. Now Kristin is well on her way to a career in welding that follows in her father’s footsteps.

Welding Jobs

How to Follow Welding Codes
“The shop went with a simple solution. At the receiving dock, workers verified the grade and spray-painted an orange mark on Grade 65 material. When welders saw orange spray paint, they knew they had to use a specific electrode.

Cameron clarified that best communication practices apply to every welding operation, not just those performing code-level work. Without these communication fundamentals, a welding shop will find it difficult to succeed, even if it employs welders with every qualification under the sun.”

Welding Businesses Find Talent through SkillsUSA
“In an effort to find potential employees at every opportunity, many companies are taking active roles in competitions. One company, Raymond, a 95-year-old forklift manufacturer, recently hosted a welding fabrication competition at SkillsUSA conference that was held in Louisville, Kentucky.

‘Participating in SkillsUSA is very important to us at Raymond, as it allows us to directly connect with students from across the United States providing them with industry insights they may never have learned on their own,’ said Dan Quiter, welding trainer, Raymond. ‘We are proud to be a part of creating the next generation of welding and manufacturing workers and help further shrink the skills gap and inspire young talent.’”

TIG Welders Find Success Working as a Team
“The components the three welders work on are one of a kind and highly scrutinized. They must collaborate with one another to develop a plan of attack. They must also train other welders in-house on the art of gas tungsten arc welding to ensure those welders are ready and able to step in at any time.

Their diverse backgrounds and work experiences have come in handy in a job that requires out-of-the-box thinking, a high level of skill, and a depth of experience to help troubleshoot never-before-fabricated components.”

Indiana Inmates Thrive in Welding Program
“More than a dozen inmates at the Scott County Jail received welding certificates or the equivalent of their high school diplomas at a graduation ceremony Wednesday.

This was the second round of students that studied and passed all the necessary tests for their diplomas, and this was the first time a county jail in the state of Indiana offered the opportunity for inmates to take a certified welding course.”

Welding Program Opens at Community College in Oregon
“Tillamook Bay Community College is thrilled to announce that we will be offering a brand new Welding program in September.

The program will consist of both a one year certificate and a two year Applied Associate degree (AAS). Welding is an excellent career that allows students to work with their hands while earning a family wage.”

Welding Gone Wrong

Subaru Recalls 200 Vehicles Over Welding Issue
“Subaru has discovered a defect so severe that it is planning to buy back a number of Legacy sedans and Outback SUVs that have already landed in owners’ driveways.

Faulty welds in the cars could not only lead to an accident, according to the automaker, but increase the risk of injuries to vehicle occupants if one occurs. It plans to recall and check about 2,100 cars for the defect, of which about 200 are expected to need repairs. About 20 of those cars are in the hands of consumers; the rest have yet to be delivered.”
