Haley DeMitchell, 20, learned about a career in welding from her grandfather, but when she investigated welding as a career for herself, she immediately took an interest in it. First, researching the process of joining metal together for a research paper and then trying welding out for herself during a visit to a welding program, she found welding to be a fascinating and exciting career.
While DeMitchell was first drawn to welding when she started stick welding, she now favors the challenge of TIG welding aluminum because of the appearance of the finished weld. She will continue studying welding at Ferris State University in Michigan, a top welding program in the state.

Details for Improving Your Welding Shop Ventilation
“If your operation is producing noticeably dirty air, it may be time for a system upgrade. When it comes time to add to or upgrade your plant ventilation systems, there are a few basic steps to follow to ensure the best results for your facility.”
Air Force Adds Welding Simulator
“While most people expect to see sparks flying throughout a room where welding is completed, one metals technology room at Dyess Air Force Base creates no sparks or mess within the operating area.
The 7th Equipment Maintenance Squadron metals technology section recently received an augmented reality welding system to improve real-world welding.”
What is the Future of Pipe Welding Automation?
“Finding an experienced pipe welder doesn’t happen often these days. The industry needs more of them but doesn’t know where to find them, and so turns to automation where possible. This includes pipe spool welding and similar setups in which the pipe is fixtured and rotated.
How well automation works, both from a business and practical standpoint, has always depended on a range of variables, two of which are how the pipe is presented to the automation and how adaptable that automation is to unexpected changes. The better and more consistent the pipe weld prep, the fewer surprises, and the easier the operation is to automate.”
Laser Welding Technology Helps with Measurements
“Fiber laser manufacturer IPG Photonics (Oxford, MA) and automotive mechatronics supplier The Brose Group (Auburn Hills, MI) announced a project to collaborate on the development of the first direct-weld measurement technology for automotive seat rails.
In-line coherent imaging (ICI) technology will increase manufacturing efficiency, streamline validation, and minimize waste. After piloting the state-of-the-art laser welding technology in its London, ON, Canada facility, Brose will integrate weld cells into several manufacturing facilities in the US and Europe, with production set to begin early 2020.”
Welding Education
Cleveland Area High School Adds Welding Facility
“When the new and improved Euclid High School facility is unveiled in fall 2020, the campus will have a number of new amenities, including an indoor-outdoor 9,000-square-foot welding lab. It’s a fitting (and long-awaited) development for the school’s celebrated welding program, which has ranked among the country’s top five for the last decade.
‘What the new lab will do is allow us to do all of our projects in our [home] lab at EHS,’ says head welding instructor Ryan Eubank. Currently, the program utilizes facilities at Lincoln Electric and Lakeland Community College in teaching participants about trades including welding, fabricating, design, and engineering.”
6 Women Graduate from Iowa Welding Program
“While the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that women make up only 5% of those working in the welding field, some, including institutions like NIACC, are looking to change that statistic through the ‘Women in Welding’ program. The four-week program were given an understanding of proper welding techniques and procedures for welding structural carbon steel with the Gas Metal Arc Welding, and including practicing with flat, horizontal and vertical positions of welding fillet welds.
Nichole McRoberts formerly worked in inventory, and is one of 6 women that went through the program and received a diploma of completion. She found out about the program through IowaWorks. ‘It sounded so good, it was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up.’”
Student Receives Scholarship for Welding from Nicole LeClair
“LeClair is a welder fitter, a welding engineering technologist, a level 1 visual welding inspector, is Red Seal certified and recently got her international Welding Engineering Technology diploma. She is now a welding professor at Mohawk College in Stoney Creek, Ont.
The award was created to support one student within Ontario each year who is pursuing welding at the post-secondary education level within Ontario.”
Welding Events
2019 Welding Industry Summit, Aug 29, 2019 – Aug 30, 2019
“This Summit is intended to bring the best quality information and construction welding professionals together for a series of interactive presentations on how more value can be brought to welding operations and the best way to execute success welding plans into projects.”
FABTECH, November 11-14 in Chicago
“FABTECH brings a wealth of innovation and technology solutions to Chicago November 11-14, 2019. More than 48,000 attendees and over 1,700 exhibiting companies are expected to gather once again to celebrate metal manufacturing at its best. The event also provides educational sessions and expert-led presentations covering the latest trends and technology in the metal forming, fabricating, welding and finishing industries.”
