Welding student Masih Madani had been studying housing development for the past four years. When he looked into the housing crisis in northern Nevada, he realized that he could weld shipping containers together in order to provide affordable housing. Madani enrolled in Western Nevada College’s welding program and developed simple prototypes that are easy to assemble.
Today, Madani is looking to work with city officials and donors in order to find available land and to fund the containers, which cost an estimated $25,000-$50,000. The cold winters in northern Nevada and the number of homeless people in the region make the situation urgent, but Madani is confident he can produce hundreds of homes using the containers.

Lincoln Electric Posts Strong Profits
“Lincoln Electric delivered adjusted earnings of $1.01 per share in fourth-quarter 2017, up 25% year over year. Earnings came ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 96 cents. Results were driven by the company’s focused operational and commercial initiatives. Total revenues climbed 33% year over year to $747 million including a 20.3% benefit from acquisitions, 6.8% higher volumes, 3.2% increase in price and 2.2% from favorable foreign exchange. Sales also beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $698 million.”

While one half of the overall demands for nickel alloy welding consumables are currently being served by prominent players such Colfax Corporation, Lincoln Electric Holdings Inc., Voestalpine Böhler Welding GmbH, ESAB, and Illinois Tool Works Inc., the other half of shares are distributed among various regional and domestic players.”

Illinois Students Dominate Welding Competition
“Southeastern Illinois College welding students swept the competition in the 10th annual David Nuckols Memorial Welding Competition on Friday, February 9 at Gray Wolf Industrial in Owensboro, Kentucky.
The combined scores of Pace Young and Hunter Chowning won top school over eight competing schools and Young won overall welder. ”
Female Students Continue to Pursue Welding Classes
“When Olivia Hamilton of Murrysville was younger, she spent a lot of time with her father working on cars. ‘I knew I didn’t want to be a mechanic, but I remember thinking that welding sounded pretty cool,’ she said. Today, Hamilton, 18, is the first female welding student from the Franklin Regional School District, and one of only four in her classes at Northern Westmoreland Career & Technology Center.”
Welding Class Simulates Work Site
“Franklin County Career and Technical Center’s welding classroom doesn’t have the typical classroom setup with desks all in rows – and for good reason. Welding teacher Justin Steele said his goal with this CTE program is to train students to be safe and knowledgeable and ready for the workforce. To enforce that, he has rules and a certain set up his students have to follow every day.
Before students can do anything, they have to sign in like they would at a real job, and they sign out at the end of the period, as well. Steele conducts a safety meeting before students begin their assignments to make sure they have the appropriate gear and are wearing appropriate clothing to weld in. One of the students serves as a foreman who keeps track of everyone.”
Students Compete in Welding Competition
“The two students from Libby High School who competed in the Flathead Valley Community College’s Welding Competition may not have won, but they came away with valuable experience, said Libby Industrial Arts teacher John Love. The top two welders in the competition were awarded scholarships through FVCC, as well as a welding helmet, jacket and gloves. Third place won a welding helmet.”

Seventeen-Year-Old Lands Welding Job
“The newest employee at a manufacturing company in Biddeford stands out for a few reasons. There’s his skill, his age and the law that had to change to make this job possible. 17-year-old Sam Roy started working at Deepwater Buoyancy in Biddeford right after the new year.
He’s an apprentice welder, and plant manager Matt Henry says, an excellent welder for his age. ‘He’s not your typical 17-year-old,’ Henry said. ‘He’s well-spoken, driven.’”
