Weekly Welding Roundup–Students In Welding Making a Difference

The welding students at West Virginia Northern Community College in Wheeling have big goals, both for their welding program and for their community. Faced with limited space and a need for new equipment, City of Wheeling Director of Parks and Recreation Director Jesse Mestrovic suggested a project for the school’s welding program.

Mestrovic suggested a “Futsol” goal, which is a game that combines basketball and football on a hard surface. The structure is not common in America, but it offered an opportunity to use the park’s space well.

Welding Program Director Brandy Killeen and her students embraced the project, enjoying a chance to make a difference in their community while improving their welding skills.

Laser Welding Study Sparks New Lessons
“Shoot a high-power laser beam onto a piece of metal for a fraction of a second and see what happens. But researchers say the physics of laser welding is surprisingly complex. A better understanding of the interaction between laser and metal could give industry more control over laser welding, a technology that is becoming increasingly popular in manufacturing.”

Welding Students Get Grant for Table Upgrade
Helena High School was among eight recipients to receive $1,000 in grant money from the Montana Contractors Association Education Foundation.

These grants are given to schools’ industrial arts programs as a way to raise awareness of construction careers. Helena High will use the grant money to repair and improve the tables in its shop.

TIG vs. Laser Welding for Mold Repair
“Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding has been the traditional method for building-up worn or damaged mold and die surfaces prior to subsequent hand finishing or CNC machining to complete a repair. However, pulsed laser welding technology, which has been popular in Germany for decades, is gaining acceptance here in the United States as an option for mold repair (as well as other welding applications).

These welders fire a laser beam in 5- to 10-millisecond pulses that melts the base workpiece metal and filler wire that is deposited and then re-solidifies the weld pool before the next pulse.”

Welding Jobs

Houston Welders Find Work After Short Training Programs
“When it comes to the local job market, welding and pipefitting are areas that are seemingly never lacking in demand in the greater Houston area. Fortunately, there are various educational programs available to Houstonians interested in these careers, and they don’t require a lot of time or training to complete.

San Jacinto College offers Level 1 and 2 certificates, as well as an associate degree in welding technology. The college also offers classes in blueprint reading, which will help students interested in moving up the ladder once they’ve started working in the industry.”

Welding Education

Clark College Has Welding Accreditation as a Testing Center
“Clark College’s welding technologies program has earned accreditation as an American Welding Society testing center, the school announced. This accreditation makes national certifications available to students and professional welders in the region.

Beginning Wednesday, Clark made a number of certifications available for testing. The most common is Certified Welder, which tests welders on procedures used in the structural steel, petroleum pipelines, sheet metal, and chemical refinery welding industries. Certifications available include Steel, Stainless Steel and Aluminum.”

University of New Mexico-Los Alamos Adds Welding Program
“The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos will offer a certificate program in welding beginning Fall Semester, 2019. The 36 credit-hour program is designed to train students to enter the workforce as welders after one year of coursework. The new program has garnered strong endorsement from Los Alamos National Laboratory.”
