Lady Gaga Sports Welding Helmet For New Album

Lady Gaga had everyone talking about why she’s wearing a welding face shield in a promotional picture for her new album ARTPOP. In the picture, Gaga is staring at a prosthetic arm with the welding face shield flipped up.

Gaga took to Twitter with a series of updates about the album. In one tweet she mentioned that she would “chew her arm off” if she couldn’t start playing her new album. One writer for MTV mused that she would need a new arm if the album release is delayed further, hence the prosthetic arm.

Are you ready to gnaw your arm off if you don’t read the latest welding news? Let’s get started!

Welding Industry

GM Uses Friction Welding for Cadillac ELR’s Battery: “General Motors’ Cadillac division has always prided itself on its super-quiet cars, so the General’s promotion of its “ultrasonic” welding technique for the upcoming ELR extended-range plug-in may or may not make sense, depending on how you define the term. In this case, GM says the ultrasonic welding allows machines to put together metal electrode tabs on the car’s 16.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack through rapid motion that creates heat through friction.”

Lincoln Electric Addresses Benefits of Virtual Technology in the
Classroom
: “The progression of technology has long been studied in classrooms, but as technology evolves it is changing the classroom learning environment itself. How that evolution is happening is the subject of a presentation by Lincoln Electric at the Alabama Association for Career Technical Education’s Summer Professional Development Conference, Aug. 7-9, at the Jefferson Convention Complex in Birmingham, Ala.”

North Carolina Becomes a Hub for NASCAR and Industry-Related
Welding Jobs: “For a sport with roots in bootlegging in the Appalachian region, stock car racing is an enormous economic engine in this state and beyond. North Carolina boasts 90 percent of NASCAR teams, and more than 25,000 people in this state work in motorsports companies or related businesses. The motorsports association estimates the overall economic impact of the enterprise to be $6 billion in North Carolina.”

Welding Jobs

Welders Get Training Before Hitting the Job Market: “High pressure is just part of the job for Britt Brown, a welder at Conbraco Industries, along with valves, metals and the heat of a blow torch. Brown followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, who worked as a welder all of his life, but, unlike his elder, Brown attended Horry-Georgetown Technical College to gain proper credentials for his field.”

Former Truck Driver Finds New Career in Welding: “Patrick Veverka of Atkins previously worked as a truck driver before he decided to change his profession to welding and enrolled in the program at UACCM. He is pleased with the progress he has made so far. ‘The instructors have been great,’ he said. ‘Since I started in January, I have completed level one shielded metal arc welding and am currently training in gas metal arc welding.’”

Welding Company Seeks to Add New Welding Jobs: “A Sauk Rapids welding company is seeking a $250,000 loan from Benton County and other public financing to help pay for its expansion.

WFSI, formerly W.F. Scarince Inc., recently moved into the former Komo Machine building on Industrial Boulevard. Bill Scarince, who founded the company in 1983, sold most of it to a group of partners earlier this year.

The new owners have big plans to grow its high-tech precision welding and manufacturing business, and need additional workers and machinery to do so. WFSI intends to create at least 32 new jobs in the next two years, including welding positions that pay an average starting wage of $20 an hour plus benefits.”

Welding Education

Welding Students in Washington State Leave a Legacy: The Benton-Franklin Fair and Rodeo needed a lot of repairs, so students from CBC came to help: “Students worked on a new welcome sign for the fair for weeks. They also helped repair corrals, handrails, and bull-riding chutes. Welding students tell KEPR that not only will this help them with their craft, but give them a legacy.”

Welding Gone Wrong

Pipeline Welding Accident Injures Three: “Three individuals contracted by Exxon Mobil; 54 year old Kenneth Shahan of Center; 26 year old Brent Ellison of Hawkins and 25 year old Antonio Exner of Hawkins were injured by an explosion at an oil field site. The explosion was apparently caused by welding on a pipe believed to be clear of hydrocarbons.”

Welders Cause Fire in Weber County Utah: “‘The fire was racing all over, because of the wind,’ said Capt. David Nielsen of the Weber County Fire Department. ‘The ground is soft, because it’s a layer of dirt over construction waste. It’s an odd place.’ Nielsen said the fire was started by accident, likely resulting from a spark from grinding or welding by crews on site because of 21st Street road work.”
