In the welding program, each student must complete a series of metal projects. While most students weld projects for personal use, the 34-year-old Cortez, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, saw the projects in a different light.

Take a few transmission gears, some wood screws and Allen-head cap screws, and a fistful of nuts, bolts and washers. Add an old wrench, one antique iron and a broken watch. Throw in some 14-gauge steel cut to resemble feathers. Weld, then cool to room temperature.
