Preparing the 1-Inch Plate for Welding

  1. Bevel the Edges - Use a plasma cutter, oxy-fuel torch, or milling machine to create a 45-degree bevel on both sides of the plate. Leave a 1/16-inch root face to help with root pass penetration.
  2. Clean the Metal - Remove mill scale, rust, and grease using a grinder or wire brush.
  3. Fit-Up and Tacking - Align the plates properly, maintaining a consistent 1/8-inch root gap to allow for good penetration and fusion.
  4. Back Gouging (Optional) - If complete joint penetration (CJP) is required, you may need to gouge out the root side after welding the first pass.

Best Welding Process for a Double V-Groove on 1-Inch Plate

Welding Sequence for a Double V-Groove Joint

  2. Hot Pass - Follow up with a slightly higher heat input to refine penetration and remove potential slag inclusions.
  3. Fill Passes - Continue layering weld beads to fill the groove evenly. 
  4. Cap Pass - The final pass should slightly overlap the plate surface to ensure complete fusion and a smooth finish.
  5. Back Gouging (if required) - If full penetration is needed, grind or gouge out the root from the opposite side and repeat the sequence.

Post-Weld Considerations

  • Inspect for Defects - Use visual inspection, ultrasonic testing, or X-ray to check for incomplete fusion, cracks, or porosity.
  • Stress Relief (if needed) - Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) can reduce residual stresses in critical applications.
  • Grinding and Finishing - Smooth out the final weld to meet structural requirements.
